Top Anticipated ACL Shows #5 – #1

Posted by teibs On September - 28 - 2009

deadbw@ZackTeibloom In part one, I focused more on indie-rock and dance shows. The stages are smaller, the bands younger and the dancing more lively, but the Festival Crashers are all about the two much-for-one-hand rock bands.

Before we get to the big four monsters of rock, there’s one more dance party we need to get to.

#5. Ghostland Observatory (Saturday 8:00)

How do you feel about lasers? How about capes? How about a two-man dance party with lasers, capes, hard beats and catchy choruses? I know you’ll have to choose between Dave Matthews Band and Ghostland, but (especially if you’ve seen Dave before) I beg you to let Ghostland end your Saturday night. Thank me later.

#4. Kings of Leon (Friday 8:30 p.m.)

Even though they’ve reached the saturation point where they’re so prevalent it’s getting off-putting, they still put on a damn good rock show. I didn’t mind getting my ears blown out from the VIP section at Jazz Fest and was terribly sad to have to leave after three songs at Lolla. The new album might not be their best, but they’ve now got a deep catalog of songs to pull from and they always deliver. It was a difficult choice before The Beastie Boys pulled out. Yeah Yeah Yeahs? No thanks.

#3. Pearl Jam (Sunday 8 p.m.)

This could just end up being the best show of the weekend. As Andy has argued before, Pearl Jam is the preeminent rock band of our generation. I’d be willing to argue Red Hot Chili Peppers and even though Pearl Jam isn’t my personal favorite, there’s no denying the power of their live show. I saw them at Lolla three years ago and was blown away by their massive sets and never-ending encores. And that was just a festival set. Even though they piss off Kanye and anyone who has to play after them, Pearl Jam will rock until they’re practically dragged off stage. They finish off the Sunday powerhouse with a two-hour performance and odds are it’ll run late.

#2. Them Crooked Vultures (Friday 7:30 p.m.)

The term super group is thrown around a lot these days, but if ever a band deserved it, it’s Them Crooked Vultures. Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) are all verified rock stars on their own, but with their powers combined they are… OK they’re not captain planet, but they’ll tear shit up.

They don’t have an album out yet, but Festival Crasher Blake caught their first show at The Metro after Lolla and promised a killer rock show. They do all originals and have an album in the works, so don’t expect many people singing along, but with three rock studs like that in charge, expect amazing.

#1. The Dead Weather (Sunday 6 p.m.)

Last year Jack White came to ACL with The Raconteurs and a slipped disk in his throat, leaving him barely able to sing. A year later he comes back as the drummer for The Dead Weather, in more of a supporting role, with the formidable Alison Mosshart as the front woman.

Much like Robert Plant and Alison Krauss had last year, Jack and Allison play off each other with enough sexual tension to fuel an entire season of “The Office.” You can watch videos of them leaning into the same mic and singing into each other’s mouths and get a glimpse of the intensity of The Dead Weather show, but you’ll really need to be front row, center to feel it.

Is that a bullet in my pocket, or am I just excited to see Jack? The latter.
