aclzz@ZackTeibloom There are festival days you want to forget and ones you never will. This was one of the latter. We caught the last two seats on the first shuttle to ACL and were in the media area by 10:20 a.m. as the sound of Andrew Bird’s sound check fluttered in. Knowing I was passing him up to see Them Crooked Vultures, I followed the sound, snuck through the artist area and made my way to the stage to catch the last two songs of sound check. I waltzed up to the front row. I was literally the only person there. Andrew Bird plays just for me. Dude hadn’t even shaved yet.

From there, I cut back through the artist area and saw a Beatles Rock Band kit set-up. Good omen? Andy and I had forty minutes to kill until the first band, so we tried our hands at harmonies on a nice little set of “Twist and Shout,” “I am the Walrus,” “Hey Bulldog” and “Helter Skelter” before loading up on free snacks and heading in for a strong showing by Leatherbag who may have been upstaged by the School of Rock All-stars doing “Woodstock,” “Hot for Teacher” and “Bold as Love.”

I had the time of my life dancing like my life depended on it on stage at The Knux, even getting random strangers to come up to me throughout the day. Got my jazz and bluegrass fill with MMW and The Avett Brothers before a little rock from The Walkmen and a whole lot of indie rock by Phoenix, the best show of the day.

Somewhere between Phoenix and Raphaeel Saadiq I lost my wristband for the weekend after sneaking @chrisinaustin and his fat wrist into the festival. Who cares? I could crash Alcatraz. But, you know, leave it. Saadiq brought some funky soul and even tried to cover The Stooges. John Legend got the covers going with Bob Marley and The Beatles.

Them Crooked Vultures dropped the thunder on us as we ended our 12-hour stint at ACL going back and forth between the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s and Kings of Leon. Seeing The Kings of Leon after Them Crooked Vultures is like watching The Office after It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. On it’s own, It’s great, but after you’ve seen the best, it’s a huge step down. This massive rain (and me working 6 am to 3 pm) has put a damper on our Saturday, so we may just eat sandwiches until Ghostland, but we’ll be back for another full day of rocking Sunday. Rain or shine. Pass or no pass.
