MMW @ ACL

mmwacl @AndyShore I met up with Zack up close to the main stage for MMW, eager to hear about his tales of dancing onstage with the Knux. I was also excited to see MMW again, don’t get me wrong. The trio of musicians that take the stage are some of the best in the world. They’ve each seen individual success and success with side projects, but it seems to keep coming down to these three amazing artist onstage together again. Last year MMW hit the festival circuit with John Scofield on guitar. I was excited to see them back to the original trio, though. It provides an opportunity for each of them to fill that void with their own incredible talents.

Watching John Medeski play the keys is always entertaining. The way he bangs away on his keys, and produces the noises he gets, is astounding. Early on in the set he bested out the melodica, or as Eric Blumenfeld likes to call them, the blow keys. Billy Martin’s sticks fly around his drum set playing rhythms the mind can barely process. Chris Wood plays the bass in ways I’ve never seen done. It all combines for one of the most unique jazz sounds around, and one that is fun watch develop live. Eventually, the hype of the Avett Brothers pulled us away from MMW. Too bad they didn’t live up to it.
