On stage with The Knux at ACL

fc@ZackTeibloom Sara Watkins was three songs deep into her splendid set when she got Regina Spektor’d. Her sweet voice was just not powerful enough to counter the onslaught of bass from New Orleans hip-hop duo The Knux. Once she admitted that she couldn’t even tell if her band was in key, I had to go. I felt a dance party coming on.

@den_mom told me she was in the 5th row, center so I fought my way through the crowd and took a couple swigs of rum. The Knux were just as high-energy as they were Thursday night at Bonnaroo. The two MC’s traded lines effortlessly and had the first big crowd of the weekend jumping around (even if they had to play this to do it.) Halfway through their set, they called a girl up to dance and then decided to let about 40 of us on. I never turn down an opportunity to go on stage.

Dancing on stage is an art I’d like to think I’ve perfected after a few Girl Talk shows and years of Bar Mitzvah line dancing. You want to make large, exaggerated movements, faux grind and get low as often as possible. If you have props like a headband, feel free to incorporate it, or just pull your shirt and pimp your blog.

They taught us a little dance so it wouldn’t be super awkward for all the kids that can’t cut a rug like yours truly. It was a little four-step where you kick your foot in for two beats, do a half turn and pump your fist away from the stage for two beats, turn back toward the stage with your other hand pumping for two beats and then point up towards the crowd. Pretty simple stuff and I added some flourishes of my own.

I was on stage for about 10-15 minutes, doing my thing, leading some wild jumping during “Jump Around” and attempting to pick up the guitar that was just sitting there. I just wanted to pretend to play it on stage so there could be pictures of it, but their DJ said it probably wasn’t the best idea to try. Later, when walking around the festival, two sets of strangers later recognized me as “that guy who danced on stage” and “the best dancer up there.” As Andy and I seem to be saying a lot this weekend, “We’ve done this before.”

Pic thanks to @supercooleric.

[…] Zack and I split up at Sara Watkins, our ACL really began. Zack found himself onstage with the Knux, making such an impression while dancing that two separate strangers came up to us during the day […]
