Sara Watkins @ ACL

sarawatkinsacl @AndyShore Looking at the ACL line-up several times over, it wasn’t until recently that I realized who Sara Watkins was. I had seen the lovely fiddle player in her more known band, Nickel Creek. With her old band, Watkins only had to be a compliment to the rock star that is Chris Thile (yes, you can play mandolin and be a rock star).

There, she would offer her sweet vocals to mix in with those of Thile and her brother Sean. That or fiercely fiddle away, while keeping up with Thile on mandolin and her brother on guitar.

I was surprised to see that Sean was also in her solo band when they took the stage. Instead of Thile, there was a few other musicians to round out the ensemble. The early afternoon set started out fine. Soft and relaxing, with Watkins showing off the fiddle prowess that most likely attracted John Paul Jones to produce her solo album.

Unfortunately, I lost interest rather quickly. At a festival, I’m not usually looking for some tunes I could listen to early in the morning or while I was taking a nap. Despite both of the Watkins siblings being above average at their instruments, there was little energy to the set. After a while, it was a apparent to me that they needed Chris Thile back … badly. I admire their attempt at continuing their careers while Thile spreads his wings solo, but I had enough. I took off for Blitzen Trapper, and later found out that Wakins and co. were drowned out as soon as the Knux took the stage.

  2. honey Said,

I’ve seen her perform live…Sara’s solo music thrives in candle-lit night clubs and small venues where her voice and energy can shine. Unlike the heydays of Nickel Creek, there isn’t that jam-heavy bluegrass vibe. Sara’s solo work (and Thile’s current project for that matter) can’t really play well on an ACL festival stage.
