@AndyShore I made sure to catch at least a bit of Levon Helm’s set at Bonnaroo 2008. I have always been a huge fan of the Band, and Rock of Ages is one of my most played CDs of all time. Helm has released two solid solo albums in the last few years, but my favorite part of his set was hearing that familiar voice belting out some of my favorite tunes from the Band. Heavy rainfall and Zack having to be at work at 6:00am on Saturday meant a late start at ACL for us. We headed into the fest after the Levon Helm Band had already taken the stage.
We walked towards the stage, as they were running through “Deep Ellum Blues.” For some reason, they did not sound as great as I remembered. The band was solid and the back up singers sounded fine, but that leading voice was off. After the song ended, a member of the band spoke up. He explained that Levon was on Dr. ordered vocal rest, and would not be singing at all. Disheartened by this news, I left after a less than stellar cover of “Tennessee Jed.”
