The Dead Weather at ACL

jwacl@ZackTeibloom Jack White may have gotten his start on drums, and he’s no slouch at the kit, but an electric guitar needs to be in his hands at all times. The Dead Weather has capable guitar players that produce a rich, full sound with Dean Fertita on lead and Jack Lawrence on bass with Alison Mossheart even playing on a couple songs, but when JWIII picked up the axe for closer “Will There Be Enough Water*,” a strong rock band turned world class. My jaw dropped.

As soon as The Dead Weather put out their first single, Andy insisted Jack’s talents were being wasted on drums. I wanted to disagree and say Jack could do whatever he wants. If he wants to drum, write songs, sing a little and produce, who am I to question it? Alison was every bit the perfect front woman I’d seen in videos of them performing with sexy, searing vocals and challenged Karen O for best fem rock star moves.

I made some enemies pushing my way to about the 8th row, left of center but did find a stranger who shared a sandwich with me. They kicked off the show with album opener “60 Feet Tall” with Alison howling into the mic with a ferocious, seemingly 60 foot tapestry behind them.

The thing about the band that stood out most to me was the layer of fuzz Dean added with a synth when he wasn’t playing guitar. It’s an element I heard on the album, but didn’t fully appreciate until seeing it live. “New Pony” is my favorite track off the record and it was a force live as well. When a band only has one album and they don’t do covers, you know the set list before they play.

Jack sings on “Cut Like a Buffalo,” but his biggest vocal is on the newest Dead Weather song, “You Just Can’t Win” where Jack steps up to the mic and does a bang-up job on his ballad.

The piece de resistance from TDW is “Will There Be Enough Water.” I wish every song was like this. Jack and Alison share a mic and have their lips a tongue flicker away from making out. I’ve always thought this song was sexual innuendo**  and keep thinking Jack and Alison are going to just go at it.

Jack walked around the kit and I yelled “Give that man a guitar!” and the crowd cheered ecstatically as he picked up a white guitar to contrast his man in black look. He starts with a slow, subtle bluesy riff, builds layer after layer until he has a full-on shred going.

His stuttered, nuanced solos are simply jaw dropping. He gets wild, squealing sounds that no one else evokes from the guitar. Even though I had an incredibly sore jaw because of my Saturday night adventures, I noticed my mouth hanging completely open in awe. It was (by light years) the best solo of the weekend.

Watching Jack play drums is like watching Deion Sanders play baseball. He’s great, and I’mma let him finish, but he’s one of the greatest cornerbacks of all time! Dave Grohl was born to play drums. Jack White was born to play guitar.  Feed me the rock, boys.

*Somewhat ironically, there was not enough water at all. I was terribly dehydrated by the end of this show.

**OK you caught me. I think everything is sexual innuendo but I think the ship is Jack’s (how do I put this, drum stick)? and he’s wondering if it’ll be wet enough for him to “come in.” If you don’t think this song is sexual, you haven’t seen it performed.

9.5/10

“You Just Can’t Win” is a cover, written by Van Morrison and recorded by his band, Them.
