Phish day 2 set 3

phishhalloween @AndyShore Like I said before, it didn’t matter what Phish played during their third set of Halloween. It was already my favorite Phish show ever. Sure, I may be totally biased. Exile on Main Street is in my top-5 favorite albums of all time. Regardless, my brain could barely process that there was still another set of Phish to come. At this point in my evening and weekend, my energy had been mostly sapped. It took the heavy hitting third set to keep me on my feet.

Five songs and an encore. That’s all it took for Phish to complete one of the best music moments of my life, and that’s not something I say lightly. I’ve seen hundreds of bands in the last two years and 15 festivals. “Backwards Down the Number Line” has been a favorite of mine since Trey and Mike debuted it at Rothbury 2008. It was a great way to ease their way back into the hullabaloo. Then came the big guns. The opening notes of “Fluffhead” rang out over the crowd, and I lost my sh*t for the umpteenth million time of the weekend.

That was followed with the always funky and always fun “Story of a Ghost.” Needing to lighten up the set a bit after the almost 45 minutes of three songs, they played “When the Circus Comes to Town.” At this point, I didn’t know what Phish could possibly do to bowl me over another time. Silly me. “YEM” closed out the set with twenty plus minutes of one of the best versions of the song played since hiatus.

I have always said that if I were to have my own band, it would feature a horns section and back up singers. Much of the Exile set had both, and Phish brought them back to the stage for their encore. I thought “Julius” was the easy choice. On the album the song has both added accouterment. Instead they went with “Suzy Greenberg.” A song I admittedly wasn’t thrilled they had chosen. Shows what I know. They rocked it. Sharon Jones and Shaunda Williams traded lines, riffing on the song. The horns blared and Phish wailed to close out the best show they had put on, maybe of the 2000s.
