drakeblackeyedpeas @AndyShore Today’s match-up sees the Black Eyed Peas #2 seeded “Boom Boom Pow” go up against newcomer Drake’s #3 seed in “Best I Ever Had.” As long as the Black Eyed Peas put out an album a year, they will no doubt have a song in the Catchiest Song contest. Drake released “Best I Ever Had” on a mixtape, and it was so catchy the re-released it as an EP for sale. While one is more of a club banger than the other, it cannot be denied that both are two of the Catchiest Songs of 2009.

“Best I Ever Had” – Drake

You know an indie song deserves to be in the Catchiest Song of 2009 contest if I’ve heard of it, and you know a top-40 hit is a top seed if Zack has heard of it. Zack asked me to write up “Best I Ever Had” due to his lack of familiarity with it. I didn’t even pick this to win on my bracket. I can make one argument though. This song has the catchiest video. I could watch that video on repeat. All. Day. Long. I do have to admit I have caught myself humming this tune long after I heard it on the radio.

“Boom Boom Pow” – The Black Eyed Peas

@ZackTeibloom Black Eyed Peas’ Wikipedia page lists them as one of the most popular groups in the world. Unfortunately, this is true. They’ve sold a staggering 23 million albums and 29 million singles worldwide and “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling” topped the charts for an “unprecedented” 26 consecutive weeks in 2009. OK, why? Big beats, Fergie and the occasionally hologram-ed “Will.i.am.” which prompted my dad to keep asking “who is this William guy” on election day.

You may be “so 2008,” but this song is so 2009. Auto-tune, dance/electro/hip-hop and was downloaded 5 million times in 23 weeks, the fastest…ever. I’ll let a non-hologram-ed Will.i.am explain: “There’s no such thing as a radio song. Radio is what the people want, and ‘Boom Boom Pow’ is proof that if something’s dope, regardless of if it has that sprinkled radio vibe, that it should be played on the radio and the people are gonna like it.”

Fergie- you want a shot? “I feel that ‘Boom Boom Pow’ is not your typical first single. It’s not the typical, let’s do a hooky chorus, and you know, have a feel good-heart love song, or anything like that. It’s basically kind of to the left. We’ve always been kind of misfits, and so it kind of fits. The song is to the left, but it works, because we’re being true to ourselves.” Boom to the power of boom.
