Roster McCabe: Be a Part of New Album

rostermccabealbum @AndyShore Roster McCabe first came onto my radar when Kinetix came through Chicago during their Spring tour last year. They had just played a bunch of shows together and had struck up a friendship. I met Drew Preiner at 10klf and saw them play to a very packed Store the following week. They’ve got excellent musicianship and great songs. Billboard Magazine even recognized them as one of the bands to look out for on the jam scene. At 10klf I listened as Drew and Eric Blumenfeld of Kinetix discussed the trials and tribulations of making an album the right way. Last week, Roster McCabe announced just how they  intend to do that.

The band is looking to their family, friends and fans for support in making their new album. They hope to raise $10,000 before February 9, 2010. You become a part of the process, by doing so. For those who donate, the band will offer rewards in the form of live video streams from the studio, listens to demos and sweet Roster McCabe swag. You can even get the band to play a live concert in your home.

It’s an interesting approach in the music business and the best defense against piracy I can think of. Pay up front, or the album doesn’t even get made. I also think it’s a great way to involve fans. People love to say they were the first among their friends to discover a certain band or artist. With this, they can even say they helped the band create the music. That’s a feeling most bands cannot offer to their fans. People can literally feel they helped a band become what they are.

I e-mailed Drew with a few questions I had about the decision making process that led to this idea. I like the concept and truly hope they succeed in their goals, but realized some people may not agree with having fans fund an album. I sent drew a few questions about the potential drawbacks, and gave him an opportunity to explain things from their end.
Who first presented this idea to you guys?

Our management found the website while doing research about how to fund the next album.

How hard is it to ask your fans for money?

We questioned the idea at first but when you think about it the fans are really what keeps bands going these days. Without the support of a record label many smaller independent bands are finding it difficult to fund their projects.  The old way to success was through record label but today it is through fan communication and involvement. When a fan purchases a T-Shirt or a CD at a show of ours they are literally filling our gas tank, feeding us and keeping us on the road so we can continue to play night after night.  It seems only natural for them to help us make a new album.

What were the cons that you guys battled with in making this decision?

We couldn’t really think of any.  The process is completely legitimized through the Amazon Bank, many bands, authors, and artists used the Kickstarter program with a great level of success and our fans get great prizes for helping us out.

What ultimately made you decide on this process?

A need to raise money for the new album.  It made sense to us.
