“Empire State of Mind” vs. “Day ‘n’ Night” (Round 1)

kidcudijayz @ZackTeibloom We’ve got another hip-hop battle up in here. A little old school vs. new school with young up and comer Kid Cudi taking on the Jigga man himself. Yeah, it’s Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi vs. Shawn Corey Carter*.  It’s almost unfair that Jay-Z has Alicia belting out the chorus behind him and Kid Cudi doesn’t even get a guest spot from someone like his mentor Kanye. Jay-Z and Alicia are the Kanye and Estelle duet of this year’s contest. A legit duo where the woman takes over the best parts and makes the song hers. Even without help from Kanye, Cudi has put out the most re-mixed, longest lasting single of the year. “Day ‘N’ Night” has been building momentum for nearly two years (it was finished in Feb. 08) and you still can’t go out without hearing some version of it.

“Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys

@ZackTeibloom Last match-up I said we didn’t have enough birthday songs. Well, we’ve got more than enough New York songs already, but Jay and Alicia really have something here. Jigga calls himself the next Sinatra, as he tries to steal the “New York, New York” best song about NYC title. Alicia’s the crooner in this song that boasts live drums, a trademark timeless sample  that Jigga seems to find for every hit and memorable, smooth rhymes.

This song is big enough to make Andy long for a Chicago anthem, dominated the New York club scene and Yankee captain Derek Jeter uses it as his at bat anthem.  Last night I was at a bar and “Day ‘n’ Night” came on. I was curious to see the reaction the song would get. I was sad to see only a couple people singing along and few people dancing. It was bad enough that @chrisinaustin insisted we move on to another bar to find people dancing. I have a feeling “Empire State of Mind” keeps us there a few more minutes.

“Day ‘n’ Night” by Kid Cudi

@AndyShore It’s in the laid back groove of the beat that “Day ‘n’ Nite” initially reels you in. Combined with Kid Cudi’s sing-song flow on the track, you have the formula for one of the Catchiest Songs of 2009. Any first listener should be hooked and singing along by the second chorus. The song is also versatile enough to work it’s way into every walk of life. It’s dance-y enough to play in a club, but I’d also play it in my car with the windows down (I almost added “a-a-at night,” then remembered our deal of no lyrical puns). Cudi rode the wave of catchiness all the way to a festival slots late night at Rothbury and on Perry’s Stage at Lollapalooza 2009. A good barometer of how catchy a song is, is how many times it is remixed. Cudi’s “Day ‘n’ Nite” has been remixed several times over, by some of the biggest names in the biz. Zack’s beloved Hood Internet has even remixed the song threefold.

*Rappers real names are always hilarious.
