“1901” vs. “Pokerface” (Round 1)

phoenixladygaga @ZackTeibloom We’ve come to the final match-up of round one. There are a few perfect brackets, but the real points come in the next couple rounds as points double. This match-up is a monster, with indie-rock heroes Phoenix matching up against Lady Gaga, the juggernaut of the tourney. A bunch of you have “Pokerface” going all the way, but I know a few Austinites pretty excited about Phoenix coming back into town tomorrow night after their wildly triumphant show at ACL in October. We could have just as easily gone with “Lisztomania” and it’s infections Brat Pack video, but we went the same way Cadillac did and went for “1901.” Everyone sang “Pokerface” this year, from Cartman to Christopher Walken. Would you rather have Cartman sing your song or Cadillac use it to move cars?

“Pokerface” by Lady Gaga

*The official videos of Pokerface disabled embedding and we’ve all heard it enough as it is, so here’s Cartman.

@AndyShore Zack took my first two arguments away from me, already mentioning that Cartman and Christopher Walken both performed “Pokerface” this year. Seriously, how catchy does a song have to be that it crosses the spectrum like that? The beat to this song reminds me of a tripped out synth version of the circus or carnival theme. There are few songs catchier than that. Everybody was getting their Porky Pig on with Lady Gaga this year, singing along as she stuttered through the chorus. “Paparazzi” already made it through tot he next round, and even Zack thinks “Poker Face” is catchier than that.

“1901” by Phoenix

@ZackTeibloom “1901” revs up like a motor*.  The fuzzy guitar alternating with the high pitched keyboard before the drums turn over and kick it into third gear. Thomas Mars’ voice kicks in and you’re speeding right along. It’s a force. It may have been the year of Gaga, but Phoenix went from indie-rock obscurity to monsters with their brilliant Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix album. A vivacious live show only furthers their appeal and they just killed at ACL. I got my boss to let me work from 11-9 instead of 3-midnight this Thursday just so I could crash the Phoenix show. It’s nice to have a poker face, but I’d rather have the best hand. Can’t we let France win something for once?

*I probably would have thought about this even if it wasn’t featured in a Cadillac commercial.
