@AndyShore In the real Final Four,* they play both games back-to-back in one stadium. All that excitement bottled up in one major event. Can you feel it, Crasher Nation? We’re putting both final four match-ups in one post and giving you guys until Tuesday at 3 p.m. to vote. Game one is overall number one seed “Party in the USA” going up against the George Mason of this year in “Birthday Sex.” Game two is the all Lady G(onz)aga match-up that pits “Poker Face” against “Paparazzi.” It was Gaga’s year, and it’s only fitting that she comprises half of the final four. Can Jeremih pull the upset special and show Miley how a real party in the USA goes down? Which Gaga song is moving on? (Cue the CBS update music…)
“Party in the USA” – Miley Cyrus
@ZackTeibloom I love this battle. Miley wants to party in the USA, Jeremih just wants to throw a party for two. In a lot of ways, “Birthday Sex” is in the mold of last year’s winner, “Lollipop.” It’s slow and repetitive and hard to really dance to and doesn’t have a shred of the pure pop explosion the other songs have, but it draws you in. It’s got bravado. A Swagger about it. But does that make it catchy? Miley is pure pop. The kind of song you hate yourself for loving. The one you sing along to in the club despite yourself. You throw your hands in the air. You move your hips like yeah. It somehow sounds good mashed-up w/ Biggie. Sure, you could have a club song R.Kelly wouldn’t touch, but I’d rather have my party with Miley**. The Britney and Jay-Z song may have been on, but it’s Miley’s year. It’s a Party in the USA***.
“Birthday Sex” – Jeremih
@AndyShore This song is so obvious, Jeremih himself was surprised somebody else hadn’t already written it. I think by somebody, he meant R Kelly. This song heralds what everyone really wants on their birthday. Take it from the author himself: “I do think the lyrical concept really did help the song out! To where I feel it’s gonna be a timeless record that’ll still be played YEARS from now – simply because it’s become a new birthday anthem!” The song is catchy, because all you have to do is sing it over and over again. Sing it. Preach it. Have it. Vote for it.
“Poker Face” – Lady Gaga
@ZackTeibloom I almost want to put each Gaga song in a different bracket so Gaga could match-up against Gaga if the public wanted it to be that way. That said, “Paparazzi” never even deserved to make it this far. Can I admit something? I’ve literally never heard this song until right now. Not once. “Pokerface” is inescapable. “Paparazzi” must be an L.A. thing. I don’t get the appeal. “Pokerface” has the beat, the chorus you can’t stop repeating to yourself and the South Park seal of approval. To pull a trick out of Andy’s bag, is this even worth debating? It’s Pokerface.
“Paparazzi” – Lady Gaga
@AndyShore This is a celebrity obsessed culture and “Paparazzi” pays homage to that. Just like the overkill of celebrity news in the media, this song reached that level. You couldn’t escape it. It played on multiple radio stations at once, in every bar or club you went to and might even be the most played song on the iPod of every girl you know****. The slow, drawn out nature that Gaga croons this tune is what makes it catchy. Anyone can catch themselves singing along to it, be it in the car or shower. Any song that is capable of upsetting “Empire State of Mind” is a force to be reckoned with in this contest.
*Not that this isn’t the real final four
**If I don’t make this footnote, Andy is guaranteed to make a “party/Birthday sex” w/ Miley comment. He still probably will.
***This is where I take the gloves off and say “screw it” to my no punning the lyrics agreement.
****What girls are you hanging out with, Shore?
