@AndyShore Ellen makes her debut tonight as the replacement to Paula Abdul. NPH filled in admirably, but most of the celebrity judges were forgettable. Like the celebrity judges, the auditions were mostly forgettable. Last season I could tell you I wanted to root for Danny Gokey from the get go. There is nobody that stands out like that for me this season. Hopefully Hollywood will show us some contenders. Ellen’s debut has me excited for one thing. Crowd shots of Portia De Rossi.
8:04 Katie Stevens is singing “For Once in my Life.” She has a good voice, but I’m not feeling the soul of Stevie in it. Skiiboski is singing “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.” He’s not very good, and he’s even creeping out Ellen. She advances, and thankfully we are through with Skiiboski. Singing his exit was the best part.
8:13 Andrew Garcia was a favorite from auditions and he even sounds great covering Paula Abdul. Kara is taking over seated dancing duties for Paula. Vanessa Wolfe rode the ae-ro-plane all the way to Hollywood. She won the judges over singing a country, and her cover of Blind Melon’s “No Rain” is not going to get her to the next round. Andrew does, though he didn’t even need to butter up the judges by singing Paula to do it. Consolation prize for Vanessa? She gets to ride back to Tennessee on the ae-ro-plane!
8:24 Janell Wheeler put a nice acoustic twist on “American Boy.” Haeley Williams is sticking to her country smorgasbord sound and she pulls it off. Mary Powers is not as good as I remembered, but the judges still liked her. They all advance.
8:35 Lilly Scott is possibly the best one yet. Ella Fitzgerald would be proud of that cover. She’s sticking around. Hopefully that sunny personality will wear off on the weather. “Big” Mike Lynche advances, but I heard he got DQ’d by his father’s loose lips.
8:47 The Barney Girl with a whip is going home, and @MattSilver’s dreams are crushed. He’s gonna need to find someone else for the spank bank.
8:49 Casey James kept all his clothes on, but knocked the judges socks off singing “I Don’t Need No Doctor.”
8:56 Didi Benami is singing a song Kara penned. I thought Lilly Scott was going to be tough to beat, but Didi may have done just that. Kara staring admirably at Didi said it all. Simon even had to admit he liked it, despite Kara. Crystal Bowersox followed a tough act in Didi Benami, but still sounded good. I really liked all the contestants singing backup from the audience.
Tonight’s best: Andrew Garcia and Casey James from the guys side. Lilly Scott and Didi Benami repping hard for the ladies.
