fleayorke 300x130 Atoms for Peace at Coachella 2010: Flea and Thom Yorke were born to play together@ZackTeibloom You’ll notice two things from seeing Atoms for Peace live. The first is that Flea makes everything better. Eraser is a strong album, but I feared it could be too slow for a live festival setting. Not with Flea. The Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist pumps new life into the album. The second thing you’ll notice is that Thom Yorke and Flea were born to play together. They’re mirrors of each other.

Flea moves with his basslines. Thom moves with the beat in his head. Only when he was at the piano did he ever stop moving. Thom bops around like a retarded muppet. Flea thumps around like an injured velociraptor. Nothing against their dancing. It’s endearing, but eerily similar. Most importantly though, Flea adds a layer to Thom’s music that he’s never had with Radiohead. He adds the trademark Flea funky slap bass sound you’re used to and revitalizes it. Eraser sounded better than ever, but the new tracks are just as exciting.

Thom Yorke dances a lot with this band…try not to smile

Andy and I had the same thought as soon as we saw Flea and Thom together. They dance the same. They act the same. What took so long for this pairing to happen? Oh, right. They were in RHCP and Radiohead all these years. Well, it’s perfect. Phone service was spotty, so we both texted our tweets at the same time without being able to see what each other wrote. Andy said they were kindred spirits. I said they were long lost brothers. We both said they were born to play together.

“Everything in its Right Place”

I can’t wait to see how this band grows together if they’re given the opportunity. RHCP replaced Frusciante and Radiohead will likely be back in the studio ASAP, but there’s something special here. It’s more than dancing. It’s more than Flea making everything he touches funkier. The band is tight. My crashing buddies liked it more than Radiohead. I wouldn’t go that far. I’d call them the best “band” this weekend though. And that’s saying something for a side project.

  1. Ryan Said,

Nice review. Though I feel the opposite about Atoms for Peace. I’m a huge fan of Radiohead and Thom Yorke’s The Eraser, but this band does nothing for me. I know it’s a different dynamic than Radiohead, but the songs seem bland, too technical and samey sounding. I hope Thom doesn’t spend too much time on AFP because he is wasting precious time that can be spent on LP8, as Radiohead are infinitely better than AFP.

  2. Ryan Said,

Oh yes, I forgot. It’s pretty much a known fact that it is Thom and Jonny are the REAL kindred spirits.

Rabid Radiohead fans have FEAR that Atoms will go ahead and Thom loses the will to making music with the former band. To say Atoms is bland is retarded. They rocked Coachella, people have no idea. The immense crowd there was on a trance, they were f u*king unbelievable. .

  5. redrum Said,

well i’m a huge Radiohead fan, but also The Eraser fan aswell… i definetely want Atoms for Peace to become a long lasting project… and tour more (Europe!) – those videos show amazing energy and i’m dying to have an opportunity to dance to Eraser songs played live :) as for Radiohead, they’ll release something sooner or later and i got a feeling it will be something very special again :) some people should chill out and stop thinking that the existence of AfP can endanger Radiohead in any way… which is obviously a ridiculous idea. Go Thom!
