Bestsongs@ZackTeibloom UPDATE: Thursday 11 a.m central – 4 Changes

-The Black Keys “Tighten Up” Bryn (Shifty White Guy)
-Spoon “Got Nuffin”
-LCD Soundsystem “Dance Yrself Clean”
-Duck Sauce “Barbara Streisand” Andy (ShoreZ)

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Christmas has nothing to do with it. In fact, Christmas is the worst thing to happen to music since the auto-tune. (I’m aware Christmas came first, but good lord how do you people listen to Christmas music?) Anyway, it’s time for the third annual “Catchiest Best song of the year contest” That’s right. We don’t give a hoot if it’s catchy anymore. We just want the best songs.

This allows us to pick “Airplanes” off Local Natives’ brilliant debut album instead of sticking with the single. A single that may not have even had a chance, since indie-rock always got beat down by Lady Gaga or Lil Wayne. No more! We want your favorites and you gave ’em to us. This is the rough draft list. It’s like the part of the wedding where they say “speak now or forever hold your peace, but we won’t hold it against you forever and make it awkward if you decide to speak now. We’ll give you through Thursday to look this bad boy over and then we’ll make the bracket available on Friday. Have fun. I know I will. In no particular order:

    1. Arcade Fire “We Used To Wait” – Bryn (Shifty White Guy)
    2. Kanye West- “Power” -Caitlin (Meg)
    3. Vampire Weekend “Cousins” -Caitlin (Meg)
    4. Broken Bells- “The High Road” -Rob O. (Godfather of FC)
    5. Gorillaz “Superfast Jellyfish” -Rob O. (Godfather of FC)
    6. Big Boi “Shutterbug” -Shawn (BC)
    7. Antoine Dodson- “Bed Intruder Song” – Rob ( ‘Heid ya best fantasy receivers)
    8. Robyn “Dancing on my Own” -Shelley (Shell-bot)
    9. Cee-Lo “Fuck You” -(sexy) Sadie
    10. Local Natives “Airplanes” Mark (Doc C)
    11. Yeasayer “Ambling Alp” -Zack (Teibs)
    12. The Dead Weather ” Blue Blood Blues” Zack (Teibs)
    13. The Black Keys “Tighten Up” Bryn (Shifty White Guy)
    14. Spoon “Got Nuffin”
    15. LCD Soundsystem “Dance Yrself Clean”
    16. Duck Sauce “Barbara Streisand” Andy (ShoreZ)

    1. shore Said,

Get Freelance Whales off there and replace it with Duck Sauce – “Barbra Streisand” and “The Ghost Inside” is a better Broken Bells track, “Tighten Up” is better Black Keys.

Man that Google Chrome video for Arcade Fire’s We Used to Wait is so freaking awesome. I forgot about that.

    3. Rob Said,

No way is The Ghost Inside a better track than The High Road. You have just heard The High Road too many times. Because it gets played so much… because it is a better track.

      SCIENCE!

    5. Rob Said,

Also, Dance Yrself Dry should be the LCD Soundsystem choice. Although, I doubt anyone who hasn’t heard it will make it past the 2 min mark without coercion.

    6. Rob H Said,

Dude. Anything from the Spoon album EXCEPT “Who Makes Your Money,” please. I skip over that one every time. Suggested: 1) “Got Nuffin” 2) “Out Go the Lights” or 3) “Nobody Gets Me But You”

    7. Shiftywhiteguy Said,

      1. Dance yrself CLEAN, Rob…dancing yrself dry? Now that’s just absurd. But, yeah, I’m leaning towards that as the standout on This is Happening.
      2. Airplanes is too personal and sentimental. It feels like you only like it because it’s a personal favorite. Wide eyes is a memorable, extremely well-crafted single that is representative of the band’s overall effort on that album. The ultimate test: you’re introducing Local Natives to someone who has never heard them before. You only have 4 minutes of that person’s attention to get them interested. You put on Airplanes over Wide Eyes? No way.
      3. This is the same reason I’m ok with replacing Next Girl with pretty much anything on Brothers. Next Girl feels like a personal favorite of mine, not necessarily the best song on the album.

    8. Meg Said,

Thoughts on Local Natives songs copied from gchat with Zack, because I’m at work and don’t have time to formulate this any more coherently:

Either way you really can’t go wrong. Both songs (“Airplanes” and “Wide Eyes”) rock. I do think “Airplanes” was a lot of people’s first exposure to LN. But “Wide Eyes” really gets at the heart of what their music is about -tight, engulfing drums with an energetic rhythm, sweeping movement, great harmonies. “Airplanes” is a great song because the lyrical content is incredibly moving, it’s super catchy, the drums are really hypnotic and memorable and the chorus fucking kicks ass. And ShiftyB, I actually *would* play “Airplanes” for a friend for their first exposure (and have done so), because the very first time I saw them live, that was the song that drew me in off the bat.

I do agree with Rob H about Spoon – I’m still for “Got Nuffin'” because, again, I think it represents the whole album well (it’s a little jammy, very punchy, but with a good attitude, which is a lyrical change for Daniel and kind of refreshing in that way).

    9. MML Said,

Just a few suggestions… Janelle Monae – “Tightrope,” Deerhunter – “Helicopter” or “He Would Have Laughed,” Gil Scott-Heron – “New York is Killing Me,” Maximum Balloon – “Apartment Wrestling,” Kings Go Forth – “One Day,” of Montreal – “Sex Karma,” Warpaint – “Undertow,” Oh Land – “Son of a Gun,” The New Pornographers – “The Crash Years,” Titus Andronicus – “To Old Friends and New”

      Dance Yrself Clean wins all.
Rob- Thank you for showing some Phantogram love. Eyelid Movies is one of my personal favorites of 2010 for sure.

      White Rabbits- Percussion Gun
I know it’s played out- but can’t believe there’s been no mention of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes “Home”
and I think Sun Hands is a better Local Natives choice
and The Limousines- Internet Killed The Video Star

    11. Mark C the D.O.C. Said,

      – “Excuses” by the Morning Benders – I know I enjoy this band more than the average bear but this track is extremely thoughtful and replayable

      – “Baptism” by Crystal Castles – this track goes so fucking hard, if you’re mad it will make you furious, if you’re sad it will make you depressed, if you’re in love it will make you want to bone

      – “Tiger” by Maximum Balloon – number one song of the year in my book, feel like it kind of slipped through the cracks, do yourself a favor and go listen to it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G06zb2yCTKY

      * songs that shouldn’t be on the list: anything by Vampire Weekend, Broken Bells, or Gorillaz, you know, unless you want Festival Crashers to be pitchfork lite

    12. Meg Said,

I gotta disagree with you, Mark. If FC were “Pitchfork lite,” they’d purposefully leave OFF the bigger, more hyped bands in favor of the smaller indie groups you listed.
