@ZackTeibloom Consider this the opening tip-off to start our December madness tournament. The #1 seed Cee-Lo takes on Spoon, a Cinderella story out of Austin. Our hometown heroes played this song everywhere from ACL to Lollapalooza, Coachella, SXSW and the Waterloo (Austin’s biggest record store) parking lot. We couldn’t even find an official video of it, but we most certainly found Cee-Lo’s video. And watched it on repeat to the point that we’d find ourselves singing “Fuck You” at very inappropriate times throughout the day. My favorite clip I could find of “Got Nuffin” was from Lollapalooza and they tear it up. It would be easy to cast an automatic vote for “Fuck You,” but Spoon has something here. Give Spoon a chance and watch as Britt manages to sweat in January as his band mate slaps maracas and a tambourine together and ends with a flurry of activity in the final minute.
Quite frankly, I don’t think any song Spoon has ever written could topple “Fuck You,” and only “I Turn My Camera On” and “The Underdog” would have a chance. That’s OK. Spoon has officially lost the “indie” part of indie rock and is now a full-fledged rock band. They consistently plays night time sets at major festivals, can sell out Stubbs for multiple days in a row and keep churning out strong album after strong album, with Transference, their 6th, peaking at #4 on the charts. “Got Nuffin'” got the nod over other strong songs like “Who Makes Your Money?” and I’d attribute it to the last minute.
You can see the glory in the live video at 3:55 as the drummer flips a stick to the guy who was already banging his tambourine and maracas together as he becomes a second drummer as Britt wails away as the pace picks up for an exquisite outro. It’s an assault with Britt doing his guitar as a gun move and the band blasting through the title track of their EP at full speed. I didn’t even mention the sweet love song that precedes this gorgeous ending, but it’s classic Spoon. Is that enough to top instant classic Cee-Lo?
@Andyshore If you would have told me in the summer of 2006 that Cee-Lo would come out with a song as good, if not better than “Crazy” I would have scoffed at you. Probably called you terrible names. Your opinion on everything else from that point on wouldn’t have any value. Cue 2010’s smash hit “Fuck You.” The song blew up so fast that they weren’t even able to get a real music video ready for it quick enough. A video with the lyrics was put up as a placeholder, until the incredible official video was ready for release. It’s so big, that Umphrey’s McGee was covering it just days after its release at North Coast Music Festival. It’s so big, it even got the Glee treatment (and from Gwyneth Paltrow no less). You could listen to this song on repeat for days, and never get sick of it. It’s just that good. The groove is great, the vocal performance is incredible, you can sing it at the top of your lungs. Everyone has lived that moment where someone treated you as if they were better than you. Here is your anthem. Shout it from the rooftops. Vote for it as it wins Best Song of 2010.
