The Black Keys “Tighten Up” vs. Yeasayer “Ambling Alp”

bkyeasayer@AndyShore The match up of some of our festival favorites. We’ve seen the Black Keys tear up almost every music festival around, and Yeasayer almost as often. It’s the stripped down blues-rock of the Black Keys versus the worldly electro-synth pop of Yeasayer. Really, it’s one of the biggest match ups of our musical tastes too. It wasn’t hard to decide who was going to write up which song for this one. Especially not when Zack had such a strong connection to “Ambling Alp.” For me, “Tighten Up” was just the best song off of an album that showed us a grown up and evolved Black Keys. They added musicians for this album, and even to their live shows that followed. I admit it wasn’t as easy of a pick as some of the other match ups, but it wasn’t that hard either.

@ZackTeibloom In early August, on my last day at Apple, I found out I didn’t get the Facebook job, forgot my leftover Chinese food in the work fridge on the one day I’d never go back and still had hours worth of stuff to move out of my old apartment in 100 degree heat and stepped in a mud puddle. I turned to one song to redeem the day and blasted it in my car stereo. It was this one. It’s the most life-affirming song I’ve ever heard. “You must stick up for yourself, son. Nevermind what anybody else done.” Lyrics aside, it’s a captivating collage of sound with the punctuating drums, gorgeous synth and a hypnotic beat. Please tell me you’re watching the video with the naked people, dripping faces and goo men. Seriously, watch it. I’d write more, but I’ve gotta drive to Louisiana to sell remote control helicopters. Guess what I’m gonna be listening to on the way there. “Wear your wounds with pride.”

@AndyShore From the whistled synth melody at the songs onset, juxtaposed with Dan Auerbach’s strums, “Tighten Up” pulls you in. The bass gets your head bumping and you can’t help but groove along the rest of the way. I think the thing that gets me most about this song, is the rhythm that Patrick Carney puts behind it all. It’s a song that you want to play as loud as you can stand, cruise in your car with the windows down, or serenade that special someone with. I haven’t even gotten to the video yet. I don’t know if you’re as into naked, melty goo men, as Zack is, but the Black Keys video is not that. It’s endearing and clever and serves as a great compliment to the songs lyrics. “Tighten Up” should not only win this match up as the better song, it should win better video as well.
