@ZackTeibloom Here we are. Will 2010 be remembered as the year The Black Keys blew up or the year LCD took the best farewell tour since Kareem Abdul Jabaar? Probably both, but there can only be one champion. It gets harder to come up with things to say by the final round. If you’ve been following this contest, you’re familiar with the arguments. The Black Keys added a couple members, which is kind of the opposite of “Tighten Up” and LCD created a song with enough build-up and tension to make Rachmaninoff sit up in his grave. They both tour through festival crowds in their early evening time slots and gave us two of the best albums of the year. Let’s see how this shakes out.
@AndyShore I honestly couldn’t put together an argument that I could get behind for “Tighen Up” against “Fuck You.” To be fair, I couldn’t do it for any of the songs in this contest against “Fuck You.” That doesn’t mean “Tighten Up” couldn’t be the Song of the Year without “Fuck You” in the picture. Do you want to know why “Tighen Up” is the best song of the year, over “Dance Yrself Clean.” You can tell how awesome “Tighten Up” is from the first note of the first listen. You don’t have to get to know it, but it does get better when you do. It rocks, gets you going and has an awesome video compliment. The first listen of “Dance Yrself Clean” might not even make it to the good part. This is also how I felt about seeing these bands live for the first time. Black Keys? Floored and in awe of how much noise two guys could produce. LCD Soundsystem? I was bored of their repetitive nonsense and only wanted them to end so I could see Jay Z. I’m not saying I didn’t grow to love LCD too, because Zack will be the first to proudly boast that I do now. I’m just telling you to go with your initial gut reaction. That’s what tells you which the better song is.
@ZackTeibloom Andy and I saw the Black Keys at ACL from the side, back farther than we would have liked, as we were trying to meet up with a couple friends who aren’t well versed in triangulation theory. For LCD? We got as close as we could and danced ourselves clean up as the show went on. I wouldn’t have organized a meeting during LCD for any reason. The 8th best song on Brothers may be better than the 8th best song on This is Happening, but for one song, “Dance Yrself Clean” is the choice. It’s an anthem. An instant classic of a show-starter/show stopper. “Tighten Up” is wonderful and it settles nicely into Brothers, but it doesn’t knock you on your ass like “Dance Yrself Clean.” It sounds like the song of the year.
