@ZackTeibloom Welcome to the 4th annual Best songs of 2011 Festival Crashers contest. I’m pretty happy with this list. Lady Gaga is the only one on here that really pains me. After two years of doing catchiest song, we moved to favorite song so we could avoid Gaga-esque crap, but here we are. Oh, well. Andy made a good point that he wanted more of a cross-section of music. If it was only me picking, it would be almost all indie-rock. Andy made sure we had more pop, hip hop and dance.

We’ve whittled down our list of favorites to 7 each and left some room for suggestions. We’re down to 22 songs. 14 are in and ranked. The other 8 we’ll vote in this week. For now, your job is to pick a song that will be “yours.” Here’s what we have so far. Details on how to pick your song at the bottom. Here’s the list of 14 that are definitely in the contest. Andy and I each claimed one song as our “favorite.” Almost everything else is up for grabs. You’ll notice if it’s open because it will say OPEN in caps.

By the way, you can listen to all the nominees on Spotify

  1. Adele “Rolling in the Deep” (Andy)
  2. Young the Giant “My Body” (Zack)
  3. Lady Gaga “You and I” (OPEN)
  4. M83 “Midnight City” (Rob H.)
  5. Jay-Z “N-word* in Paris” (Emily D.)
  6. The Black Keys “Lonely Boy” (OPEN)
  7. Justice “New Lands” (OPEN
  8. The Drums “Money” (Caitlin)
  9. Foo Fighters “Walk” (OPEN)
  10. The Joy Formidable “Whirring” (OPEN)
  11. Foster The People “Helena Beat” (David H.)
  12. My Morning Jacket “Outta My System” (OPEN)
  13. Coldplay “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” (OPEN)
  14. Tune-Yards “Bizness” (Shina)
Those 14 are locked in. The 8 and 9 seed will face off (The Drums vs. Foo Fighters), 7 vs 10 (Justice vs. Joy Formidable) 6 vs 11 (Black Keys vs. Foster The People) 5 vs. 12 (Jay Z vs. My Morning Jacket), 4 vs 13 (M83 vs. Coldplay) and 3 vs 14 (Lady Gaga vs. Tuneyards.) Then we have to decide the #15 and #16 songs to face Adele and Young the Giant.
Then we have to pick 2 from the following 8:
  1. Los Campesinos “By Your Hand” (OPEN)
  2. Bright Eyes “Jejune Stars” (Caitlin)
  3. Ezra Furman “Mysterious Power” (Boris/Mel Furman)
  4. Cut Copy “Take Me Over” (Laura S)
  5. TV on the Radio “Will Do” (Courtney S)
  6. Florence + The Machine “Shake It out” (OPEN)
  7. Stepdad “My Leather, My Fur. My Nails” (Marisa L)
  8. Brass Tacks “Not in the Face” (Christina M)
Tomorrow we’ll have Los Campesinos vs. Brass Tacks and Bright Eyes vs. Stepdad
Wednesday will be Ezra Furman vs. Florence and the Machines and Cut Copy vs. TV on the Radio.
Thursday, those winners will square off and the winners will get the 15 and 16 slot.
For now, you have one job. Pick a song from any of the (OPEN) songs and comment that songs name in the comment section on this post. Not on Facebook or Twitter or e-mail. We want to be fair and give it to whoever was first. On this post, leave a comment with just the song name and leave your first name and last initial. Only one song per person. We’ll post the first two polls tomorrow and you can vote. The bracket will be posted on Friday and we’ll give you the weekend to fill it out. We’ll walk you through it. If you’ve ever done a March Madness bracket, it’s easy. If you haven’t, it’s still easy.

By the way, you can listen to all the nominees on Spotify

*We’re calling the Jay-Z/Kanye song “‘N-word’ in Paris” for the duration of the contest. We’re way too white not to.

If you still need songs…I stand behind Wye Oak’s “Civilian.” I think it’d stand up beautifully against Adele. Observe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVaeAu_noFM
