@AndyShore Pretty Lights had a breakout year. The outfit switched up its normal DJ and drummer show and rolled out a full live band and released one of my favorite albums of 2013. Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure that it will be the song that needs to get lucky this round. Daft Punk started the hype machine around this album and song at this year’s Coachella on SNL and the train kept rolling to the highest highs Daft Punk has seen in its career. You know how I know “Get Lucky” will win this round? Even my dad loves “Get Lucky.” He was jamming on it in his car on one of my last trips to Chicago.
@ZackTeibloom Daft Punk set the bar so high with this song, that there was a collective disappointment when the rest of the album didn’t stand up to this stellar single. It’s incredibly catchy and Pharrell is so perfect on it, that “Get Lucky” was cruising to song of the summer until Pharrell moved on to help on “Blurred Lines.” Can we just give the award to Pharrell? It’s almost a given that Daft Punk will cruise on to the second round, but I have to admit I like the direction Pretty Lights are taking.
@AndyShore I have always admired Talib Kweli. He’s looks outside the world of hip hop for collaborations that raise the bar for both genres involved. The Soulive “Bridge to Bama” Hi-Tek Remix featuring Talib Kweli has long been a favorite of mine. “Around the Block” has a lot of similar elements, but brings in the electronic element. I will always, always love almost anything that features soul singers and some funky guitar. Listen, I’m happy this song made it onto our bracket. It’s important to see music continue to evolve and move forward. The meld of soul, electronic and hip hop is one I’d happily accept more of. However, I’ll concede that Daft Punk pushed music forward as well … with a much better song. I’m all for disco in 2013 and beyond.
