Prince at SXSW Review: Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough

@ZackTeibloom “Ain’t no party like a purple party, ’cause a purple party don’t stop.” Prince first said this early Sunday morning during his 50-minute-long second encore. When he said it again somewhere around his fourth or fifth encore, the artist currently known as Prince had the crowd wondering if the purple party would ever stop, and hoping it wouldn’t. Those of us in the front row may have been standing in line since 7:15 p.m., and continuously stayed on our feet for the next seven and a half hours, but when Prince said “We’ve only got 20 minutes left. Let’s make them the best twenty minutes of our lives,” at 2:40 a.m., we summoned what little energy we had left on the last day of SXSW to see what the man in purple would do next. Well, those of us who were left did. But we’ll get to that.

In the 36 hours leading up to the show, after getting an e-mail with the subject “Winner! Prince” it was hard to fathom that we were actually seeing him, and in such a small venue. We scrambled to find any purple in our wardrobes and I had to decide between wearing an Adrian Peterson jersey and just wearing a normal collared shirt, opting for the latter as to not to pull a “Silver Linings Playbook” move and wear a football jersey to a nice event. The purple army was strong in a line that had multiple police officers shutting down the block and surrounding areas. One sassy woman saw another wearing the same purple blouse as her and loudly exclaimed “Oh, no! You best be taking that off!” at her. Game, blouses. The line grew restless as the 8 p.m. door time was moved to 9 and then at 9:45 we finally entered La Zona Rosa and my friend Charles and I found our way to the very front row on the audience left, next to the VIP area on top of the stage. We watched Snoop and Omar from The Wire chatting and taking pictures with other fringe celebs like Isiah Washington as we waited for A Tribe Called Quest to take the stage. After an hour of minimal to no sound checking and nothing going on on stage, It went from “I can’t believe we’re seeing Prince” to “When the hell are we going to see Prince?”

At 11:10 A Tribe Called Quest took the stage and were just dynamite. My experience with them before Saturday night was limited to one liners like “Can I kick it? Yes ya can!” but I was blown away with what a tight, smart, hilarious group they are. They played a 50-minute set churning out jam after jam, dancing in unison, getting the crowd to put all their fists up, and getting every last person to do it before proceeding. They joked about how they should break up and get back together again, and then chided the audience for not getting the joke and knowing their history. When one of them said they were just chipping golf balls when they got the call to come open for Prince, they asked another member of the Tribe what he was doing. An audience member yelled out “Jerking it!” and they busted up laughing. I recommend checking out these five six-second vines below to get a taste of how great they were as openers.

After a quick changeover, Prince’s 22-piece band marched out in style at 12:20 a.m. The 10-piece horn section had those goofy animal hats and they played their way on as two drummers, two guitarists, three back-up singers, a dancer, a bassist and a keyboardist and a couple more I couldn’t even keep track of. If Stefan was describing the show, he’d tell you that Prince still has everything. At 54, he seemingly hasn’t aged a day, he has the stamina of a 20-year-old college sophomore, his voice sounds majestic, he can still spin like a freaky dreidel, and his sensuality is on full display and he will happily grind any inanimate object near him. OK, it was mostly just a stool, but still he really gave it to that stool.

With a massive light show and four disco balls behind him, Prince strutted all over the stage, spinning and dancing for a couple songs before the confetti dropped for “1999″ early in the set. The crowd obeyed the no camera policy as long as they could, just letting Prince wash over us in all his quirky wonderfulness. The first hour flew by, as the five hours of waiting for him were easily forgotten. After that first hour, Prince came back and told us “They called our people and said they wanted some funk in Austin,” before going into “Purple Rain.” Thinking this was the only encore, I pulled out my phone for a couple pictures and a couple vines.

The show felt like it could have been sufficiently amazing after an hour and a “Purple Rain” encore, but when he came out for encore number two and said “the after party starts right now,” we’d eventually learn the after party would be longer than the party. He covered Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” in that lengthy second encore and a new narrative unfolded: How much Prince can you handle? During that MJ cover, I glanced over to see “Snoop” from “The Wire,” as we both had huge goofy grins, me dancing from the front row, she dancing from VIP and laughed at how surreal it all was. Prince was covering Michael Jackson and we were close enough to touch him.

“Thank you, Austin. Don’t make me hurt you. You know how many hits I got?” He hurt us, as the hits just kept coming, playing originals like “Extra Loveable,”Satisfied,” “U Got The Look,” “Musicology,” and “Housequake” and mixed in all kinds of covers. He didn’t leave the Jackson family alone, covering Janet’s “What have you done for me lately?” and the Jackson 5′s “Dancin’ Machine” and Curtis Mayfield’s “We’re a Winner” and pulled from The Time’s catalog for “Cool” and danced The Bird during “Jungle Love.” It was all spectacular, but I was still waiting for Prince to pick up a guitar.

But besides not wearing purple, the biggest surprise was that the artist Rolling Stone called the 33rd best guitarist of all time never picked up a guitar. Not once for the entire show. With a 22-piece band behind you, including two incredible female guitarists, maybe you can rest on being the band-leader and singer, but it was a bit disappointing to not see Prince’s guitar chops. His band is world-class, but no big names, so to hear them play a ten-minute funk jam for encore number four as Prince just faux conducted them was enjoyable, but maybe not the best use of the talent on stage. Still, this was 160 minutes of Prince being incredible, so I’m not complaining.

When Prince was coming back for a fifth encore and then a sixth and then a bow, Snoop was nowhere to be seen, and she wasn’t alone. The crowd had thinned out to nearly half, but those of us there still chanted “Prince! Prince! Prince!” at 3:01 a.m. until the sound guy finally turned the house music on and said “Good night, thanks for coming out”. The 54 year-old magical alien being of a man seemed appalled that they were making him leave so early. “You heard of five-hour energy? My name is 11-hour energy!” At 28, I could barely stand another minute. I shuffled out the door, thrilled to have been lucky enough to have seen this once in a lifetime show and biked the three miles home through crazy Saturday night SXSW traffic and felt like I was floating as my ears rang harder than they’ve ever rung. (36 hours later and they’re still ringing when it’s quiet.)

Two weeks ago, Charles’ brother Rob asked me who my #1 artist was that I wanted to see live, but hadn’t yet. I debated Bowie or the Stones or a re-united Led Zeppelin before confidently settling on Prince. He did not disappoint. I’ll give it a 9.9/10 and say it’s the third best concert I’ve ever seen, only behind Paul McCartney at Minute Maid and Jack White at SXSW last year. I still need to see Prince again with Caitlin at my side and a guitar in Prince’s hands, but this was one I will never forget.

Vegas Road Trip Soundtrack

Moving to LA, I hadn’t intended on the added perk (or curse…depending on how you look at it) of living driving distance from Las Vegas. Since then I’ve gone from going to Las Vegas maybe once a year, to four or five times. It’s just hard to say no, when a friend from back in Chicago is going to be in Vegas with a room to crash in and they tell you to come hang for the weekend. Twist my arm, why don’t you. The drive to Vegas is always far superior to the hungover trek that is the return home. On the way there, excitement and energy are at a high. Everyone’s feeling good, it’s time to pop on the tunes and hit the open road.

The playlist sets the mood for the whole trip. You don’t know yet if you’re gonna blow all your money on girls or on tables like at www.partycasino.com. Of course, unless you’re honest, you’ll just come home and say you broke even.

“Drive My Car” – the Beatles: Yes. It’s totally too on-the-nose. I don’t care. It’s the leading track off my favorite road trip album of all time (Rubber Soul). Plus, after a sandwich, it’s super fun to sing the beeps.

“Viva Las Vegas” – Elvis Presley OK, we’re starting obvious here, but Vegas has never been a place of subtlety.

“Bright Lights Bigger City” – Cee Lo Green: I went to Vegas with friends for Halloween right after “F*ck You” came out and we listened to it half the ride there. I also saw him in a battle of the bands style show with the Ting Tings in Vegas.

“Joker & the Thief” – Wolfmother: It doesn’t scream Vegas song, but it’ll keep you going once the sun starts setting over the Mojave. Plus, pretty much everyone in Vegas is one of the two.

“Crazy Bit*h” – Buckcherry: Because you’ve probably already had a lap dance to it anyway.

“Panama” by Van Halen: Yeah, it’s going to be one of those weekends.

“Right Round” by Flo Rida and Kesha The Hangover montage song. You know you’ll be thinking about Zach Galifinakis and a naked Ken Jeong and a tiger when you hear it. That’s what you should be thinking about on your way into Vegas.

“Money Make Her Smile” – Bruno Mars: Speaking of strippers…the hook to this song is “music make her dance and money make her smile.” I was supposed to see Bruno Mars on my birthday in Vegas a few years ago. He was arrested for doing blow in the Hard Rock (just now realizing the irony of that) bathroom. Disappointed in not getting to see him, a friend and I turned to gambling and won $800+ on roulette.

“Tumbling Dice” – Rolling Stones: I don’t really need much of an excuse to put a song off of one of my top five favorite albums of all time (Exile on Main St.) on a playlist. It’s title doesn’t even make it a stretch.

“A Little Less Conversation” – Elvis Presley: My dad always tells a story about having the chance and passing on seeing Elvis in Vegas, because he assumed he’d have many more. It’s why I seldom pass on seeing a living legend live.

“Alcohol” – Barenaked Ladies: Two of my favorite things in Vegas…and in general.

“Shot Through The Heart” – Bon Jovi Barney Stinson’s go to song on his “Get Psyched” mix. That’s the whole point of this thing.

“Final Countdown” – Europe: The ultimate pump-up song. Welcome to Vegas.

This should do the trick to get your properly psyched for your Vegas trip. And if it doesn’t, just pull a “Swingers,” and say “VEGAS, BABY, VEGAS!!!” over and over.

FINALS: Jack White “Sixteen Saltines” vs. Muse “Madness”

@ZackTeibloom And then there were two. I think we all knew ~~I’d rig it so~~ Jack White would make the finals. He finally put out a solo album and it’s spectacular. But Muse? No one had them in their finals bracket except Matt, and he had them losing to Bruno Mars, so his bracket didn’t have a chance. Muse made it here with a unique song that manages to blend genres in an experimental way that shouldn’t work nearly as well as it does. Jack White made it to the finals by rocking out like only he can. While “Madness” is up for the best rock song Grammy, Jack is nominated in the same category, but for “Freedom at 21.” We went for Sixteen Saltines in this contest. I think you should here too.

@AndyShore As much as Zack may want it to be, this isn’t the Best Jack White Song of 2012 contest. “Sixteen Saltines” is probably the best Rock song of 2012. Muse didn’t settle for that. Matthew Bellamy and co cobbled together electronic, soul, rock and a few other things for one of the best, most unique songs of the year. Some of the bands in this contest, like Mumford & Sons, suffer from the inability to create something wholly new and exciting album to album and track to track. Muse doesn’t suffer from that. They continue to create new and interesting music that keeps fans coming back. So does Jack White. You can’t go wrong with either of these songs. You vote for the best in rock, or what could be the best, most envelope pushing song overall. Neither is poison.

@ZackTeibloom God, I love this intro. These British folk (one of whom must be Annie Mac?) at the iTunes festival give Jack White his proper due. “He really doesn’t need much of an introduction.” “What? Like winner of nine Grammy’s, an NME and MTV Europe award, former White Stripes member, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather.” “Yeah. Or anointed by the mayor of Nashville as music city ambassador, writer of a Bond song and coolest human this side of Annie Mac.” “Better hair. He’s got better hair than me.” Anyway, the riff to this gem came about when Jack was testing the studio for feedback. And the lyrics? Jack White told NME “My daughter asked for a snack, and I said, ‘what do you want to have?’, and she said, ‘I think I’ll have 16 saltine crackers.’ And I said, ‘You’ll have three!’ White also told UK newspaper The Sun that he played the song to his daughter the day after she’d asked her dad for ’16 saltine crackers’: “I said, ‘Listen, I wrote a song for you,’” he recalled, “and I played it back for her. She blushed and turned away. The next time I played the song for her, she said, ‘Yeah, I never said that!’” Whether you believe Jack or his embarrassed daughter, what turned out is the hardest rocking, best song of 2012 and the one that made me know confidently that Jack White solo was the best incarnation of the most interesting man in music.

Favorite Song 2012: Semi-Final Match-ups

@ZackTeibloom I did a little final four analysis in the recap of the last round, but here’s a little more insight. We’ve got Muse sneaking into the final four on the back of a strong single on a mostly forgettable album. We’ve got Miike Snow avoiding the sophomore slump, expanding their live show and establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with. Mumford & Sons broke out in a massive way this year and Andy thinks he finally figured out why. And then there’s Jack White finally freeing himself from the constraints of a band and sounding better than ever as a solo act with two backing bands and the best lyrics of his career. Let’s vote both rounds of the final four off in one big massive post.

@AndyShore ”Madness” manages to take elements of Muse that we’ve come to know and enjoy and meshes it with some of the aspects of electronic music that tops the charts these days. You still have Matthew Bellamy’s incredible vocal performance and some killer guitar, but it gets wobbly on the low end. It comes together in one of the year’s freshest and unique tracks. They threw out the rule book when they made this one. Muse had long ago proved to be arena rock powerhouses, but their ability to adapt and adjust with the times is unparallelled by most.

@AndyShore This is the biggest hit from one of the year’s biggest albums. I think I’ve cracked the code on why they are so popular. Mumford & Sons has perfected the art of writing songs that drunk people can sing along to. Simple hooks that repeat often. Plus, most of them have harmonies to cover up your off-pitch singalong. Add the raucous acoustic guitars, banjo, etc. that make up the track and you’ve got yourself a tune that drunk people will dance, jump up and down, and sing with. Songs like “I Will Wait” let you in on a top-40 level, but lets you keep your cred.

Favorite song of 2012: Semi-Finals Analysis

@ZackTeibloom It’s New Years Day, I’m slowly getting over a hangover and considering which resolutions I’m actually going to stick with, which is harder to do with a hangover. Oops. I just spilled a full cup of water all over my desk and keyboard at work and now any time I type an h, a j shows up as well. Anyway, here we are starting a new year and still finishing last year’s contest. One thing is settled, though. We already have our bracket winner decided, so all that’s up in the air is what song is our favorite. We’ll vote off both final four match-ups at once on Wednesday. Let’s see who we have left and who our bracket winner is.

I like to think that our final four do a pretty good job of showcasing some of the biggest bands Festival Crashers is into for the year with a couple notable exceptions. I think our Muse days are mostly behind us and they just snuck in on one great song this year and I still think Arcade Fire should have taken the final spot in 2010 over Broken Bells, but no matter how many times I kept trying to get Arcade Fire in that year, it wasn’t to be. Now I have one goal: Get Jack White to win this year, even though he barely snuck by Frank Ocean last round.

Favorite Song of 2012: Round 2: Frank Ocean “Thinking About You” vs. Jack White “Sixteen Saltines”

@ZackTeibloom This is my favorite round two match-up and not just because Jack White is involved. It’s the break-out star of 2012 in Frank Ocean vs my favorite living artist who finally put out a solo album and showed what he can do when in complete control. Frank Ocean has found a way to appeal to everyone, and that isn’t meant to be a bi-sexual joke. He’s just quite lovable, racking up six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. But he’ll have to beat Jack White in that category as well. I can’t wait to see who comes out on top here, even if we’re posting it on a Sunday night the night before NYE. We’ll let this run until it’s suit-up o’clock tomorrow, post a round 2 re-cap, and then start the final four on Tuesday. I’m just glad the tradition of not getting to our finals before the new year starts continues. But honestly I’ll only be truly content if Jack moves on.

@AndyShore I think the only shot at me still winning in our bracket, is for Jack White to be defeated here. So…I beg of you, Internet trolls. Send Jack White packing. He’s had a good enough year. I think it’s fitting that these two songs face one another in this round. “Thinking About You” could very easily be the baby making music this New Years eve that leads to some Virgos down the road. “Sixteen Saltines” is more likely to be the song that’s fueling you through the start of the night. While, everyone is looking to have fun and rock out of New Years Eve…eyes on the prize, people. I hope all of you get to the point in your night tomorrow when it’s time to put on Frank Ocean. Godspeed.

@ZackTeibloom Jack White did everything I ever wanted him to do this year. It was nice to see him do things like produce and play with everyone from Wanda Jackson to Insane Clown Posse, but Jack White belongs front and center singing and playing guitar solos. We’re there. Let’s honor it and hope he stays in this stage of his career as long as possible. More tours! More albums! More guitar solos!

Favorite Song of 2012 Contest: Round 2: Mumford & Sons “I Will Wait” vs. Bruno Mars “Locked Out of Heaven”

@AndyShore I get intro duties today, as these are both “Andy” songs. That means the rest of the world thought they were among the best of the year, and not just Austinites on a mission to keep things weird (This is the second time I’ve taken this jab at Zack today…not sure why. I love Austin.). We see the biggest hit from the band that started the revolution and made folk music popular again, versus the guy who is pretty much the poster child for popular these days. Coincidentally enough, both have elements of eras past in them. It seems fit that they face off in this round. Vote for which one will have a future in our Song of the Year contest.

@AndyShore Bruno Mars set a new charts record with “Locked Out of Heaven.” It’s the first song EVER to top the Billboard Hot 100 Radio, Digital and On-Demand charts simultaneously. That means that pretty much everyone, everywhere is agreeing on the greatness of this song. “Gangnam Style” didn’t do that. Neither did “Somebody That I Used to Know” or EVERYTHING off of Adele’s 21…all considered amongst the biggest smash hits of the last couple years. Now that “Take a Walk” has done just that from our competition, I think “Locked Out of Heaven” is the best song left on the bracket.

@ZackTeibloom Mumford & Sons is a band you’ll remember when you think about 2012. They broke through in a way no band has done in years and they did it by tapping into something no one could have guessed could be this popular in 2012. They’re not dub step or EDM or any fad, they’re just English Folk rock that anyone can enjoy. Count me as one who enjoys them.

Favorite Song of 2012 Contest: Round 2: Miike Snow “Paddling Out” vs. David Byrne & St. Vincent “Who?”

@ZackTeibloom Now it’s getting tough. These are two of my top three songs of the year and I’ll be sad to see either Miike Snow or Byrne/Vincent eliminated. We also see two of the most bizarre videos of the year competing, so do please take the time to watch these two brilliant masters at work. I told Andy to take his pick on who to write about this time, since I could write passionately about either one. Even though I have Bryne/Vincent in my finals, I’m glad I get to write about Miike Snow, since when it came down to it, Caitlin and I missed several shows at Coachella to get close for Miike Snow, but when Bryne/Vincent came through Austin we passed up the opportunity to see them to see ~~Gene Ween~~ Aaron Freeman’s solo show. I kinda regret not seeing this tour, but like any good festival, you’ll be forced to pick between favorites.

@ZackTeibloom Andy’s going to talk about how he loves a good horn section in a band, and I won’t agree, but I really love a great piano driven song as well. Having Fred Willard mouth along the words as a shirtless guy dances around doesn’t hurt, either. Andrew Wyatt really gets into the vocals on this one, starting with a soothing coo and growing into a yelling “You! “Say! Isn’t it Hard?” chorus that is one of the best hooks of the year. I wouldn’t be surprised if this one moves on, but I did put my money on Bryne. I’ll always bet on David Byrne.

@Andy Shore If I ever had a band, horns would be a must. They just seem to make everything better. Also, little makes me happier than watching David Byrne & St. Vincent dance along in this video. It’s just the movements this song dictates. It has a familiar odd, but fun David Byrne feel … with the twist of St. Vincent to make it new. This song just has a bounce to it that puts a pep in your step. It’s one of those songs that you put on and you just kinda glide around your home while cleaning. Besides, as weird as the album art is for Love This Giant, it’s still not as insanely creepy as the “Paddling Out” art is. Most days I’m not trying to figure out how to get more reminders of The Shining in my life.

Favorite song of 2012 Contest: Round 2: Passion Pit “Take a Walk” vs. Muse “Madness”

@ZackTeibloom Hey all. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas or Movie & Chinese food day and are ready to get back to round two. After winning three fantasy leagues and losing another championship by 0.98 points, I’m OK with the fact that my perfect bracket will likely go down this round. I truly don’t know who will win. I just hope some of you are around online to vote. This match-up pits Passion Pit and their synth-y fun music with sad lyrics against Muse, who somehow manages to make dubstep good, which is incredibly impressive on its own. Passion Pit clearly has the better album, but for just one song, I can see good arguments being made for either one.

@AndyShore Muse took several music elements and weaved them into something confusing, but which work together beautifully. You’ve got the wobbly bass that kicks things off, with a snare marching you through it all. Then there’s Matthew Bellamy’s haunting vocal performance over it, that really comes together in it’s harmonies. You have all these aspects that you may not be used to piecing together in your brain, but it all makes sense once the guitar solo hits. After that, the song carries you through to the end triumphantly, before exiting the way it brought you in. It is fitting that a song called “Madness” seems as if a mad genius pieced it together.

@ZackTeibloom My favorite memory with this song is running across a muddy field in Montreal with Caitlin, confused to be hearing it. “Osheaga – put your hands in the air!” For reasons that were never explained to me, Passion Pit and Tame Impala switched set times and Passion Pit went on three hours early. As soon as the opening drone started, we recognized it and started streaking across the field, sliding in the mud, getting closer and closer as the drum beat kicked in, finally settling in near the end of the song to sing-a-long and throw our hands up (See 1:32 in the linked video.) This was the only chance I had to see Passion Pit this year, but this is the song I’ll remember them for.

Favorite Song of 2012 Round 1 Recap

@ZackTeibloom We made it through round one and only one bracket is still perfect. Whaddya know, it’s the same guy who’s formatted every post, written most of the intros and created all the polls. While I may have the lead, the real points come in the next couple rounds. I had a pretty good feeling about round one, but I truly don’t know who will pull ahead next round. Perhaps the vote totals from the last round will give us a hint. Frank Ocean led round one with 55,000* votes and Muse was in a close second with 52,000. On the other hand, Miike Snow made round two with only 6,000 votes. Sure. some of this has to do with how many people happen upon the site on a day, but there’s something to be said about bands that got that kind of momentum. I’m starting to worry about Jack and his 15,000 votes.

Round two presents some real interesting match-ups:

Passion Pit vs. Muse, Miike Snow vs. David Byrne & St. Vincent, Bruno Mars vs. Mumford & Sons, Frank Ocean vs. Jack White.
